Volunteer Program

If you are looking to help others and serve the San Luis Valley community, volunteering at Rio Grande Hospital in Colorado can fulfill your desire to lend a hand to someone during their hospital stay. The Volunteer Program at Rio Grande Hospital has provided ongoing assistance and support to our patients, medical staff, and community for almost 10 years. Our volunteers are a dynamic group of driven individuals who bring us their dedication, time, and heart. Our volunteers come from a variety of ages and backgrounds with the common desire to provide a valuable service to the community by improving the patient experience compassionately.

Volunteer Opportunities

The success of our volunteers is dependent upon teamwork, which is developed through the positive relationships established within the program. Together we support the patients, staff, and community. Assignments are determined by the Hospital Volunteer Program, individual interest, availability, and department needs.  Volunteer opportunities take place primarily at Rio Grande Hospital in Del Norte, Colorado.

Volunteering opportunities may include:

• Greeting and Escorting
• Patient Comfort and Support
• Event Assistance
• Pet Therapy – must have a trained and registered therapy dog
• Community relations
• Office help (stuffing envelopes, printing…)

It is our policy to maintain and continuously improve our volunteer relations to promote retention, development, commitment, motivation and satisfaction of a competent and qualified volunteer force.

Basic qualifications to be a volunteer: sincere interest in rendering service; business-like approach with a friendly attitude; good communication skills; ability to follow directions under general supervision and/or independently; dependable, courteous, compassionate and flexible; ability to work with groups as well as individuals; patience, kindness and humility and a sense of pride in work.

All volunteers will function under the direction of the Volunteer Services Coordinator. Volunteers must complete a basic application, pass background checks and complete orientation before being assigned to volunteer duties.
