“Chartis critical access measures” refers to the performance metrics used by the Chartis Center for Rural Health to evaluate and rank Critical Access Hospitals (CAHs), including factors like quality of care, patient satisfaction, cost efficiency, number of inpatient beds, distance from other hospitals, and overall outcomes, all assessed through their “Rural Hospital Performance INDEX” to identify the top performing CAHs across the country. 

Key points about Chartis critical access measures:
  • Focus on rural hospitals:
    The Chartis Center specifically focuses on evaluating rural hospitals, including CAHs, which are often located in geographically isolated areas. 

  • Performance INDEX:
    The primary tool used to measure CAH performance is the “Rural Hospital Performance INDEX,” which considers a comprehensive set of metrics across different aspects of hospital operations. 

  • Top 100 recognition:
    Based on the INDEX, Chartis annually recognizes the “Top 100 Critical Access Hospitals,” highlighting the best performing CAHs in the country. 

Some potential measures included in the Chartis critical access assessment:
  • Quality of care indicators: Readmission rates, mortality rates, patient safety metrics 
  • Patient satisfaction: Patient experience surveys, feedback on care received 
  • Financial performance: Operating margin, cost per discharge, revenue cycle efficiency 
  • Access to care: Geographic location, travel time to hospital, availability of key services 
  • Utilization metrics: Average length of stay, inpatient bed occupancy rate
